China’s biodiesel consumption could soar if only oil majors would play along

In China, if the oil majors blended biodiesel as they may be mandated to by the government, domestic demand would grow to 8 million metric tons, up from the 1 million tons currently consumed. Sinopec has said it doesn’t want to foot the bill for investing in required tanks and infrastructure to support biodiesel blending. Most biodiesel producers are small, meaning that quality of supplies vary, with just 53 producers remaining in business after hitting a peak of 2,000 in 2007.
